Solstice plans Virginia fibre expansion with investment above $220 million
Solstice’s Colonial Heights programme adds fibre and composite capabilities, with jobs expected by 2029 and completion projected for September 2030.

Investment programme for Colonial Heights
Solstice Advanced Materials plans to invest more than $220 million to expand its ballistic-fibre manufacturing facility in Colonial Heights, Virginia. Construction and equipment installation began in May 2025, according to Simon Mawson, senior vice president and general manager of the company's electronic and specialty materials business. The programme is expected to create 100 jobs by 2029, with completion anticipated on Sep 30, 2030.
The project combines equipment upgrades, additional manufacturing capabilities and extra facility space where needed. Solstice supplies materials to companies with military contracts, including prime suppliers; Mawson said Solstice itself does not hold commercial contracts with the military. The expansion concerns that position within the materials supply chain, rather than an announced direct procurement contract.

New manufacturing and analytical capabilities
The investment spans several projects at the existing Chesterfield County facility. Planned additions include fibre spinning, composite coating and analytical capabilities. Solstice announced the programme on Jan 13, 2026, with construction and installation scheduled across 2025–2029 and operational benefits expected to build through the projected 2030 completion date.
The site's Spectra and Spectra Shield technologies use ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene fibres. Its materials serve a range of protective and industrial applications:
- Helmets, protective vests and vehicle armour.
- Naval applications and other industrial uses.
- Research and prototyping involving fibres and composites.
Company background
Solstice became an independent publicly traded company on Oct 30, 2025 after completing its separation from Honeywell. Its shares began trading on Nasdaq under the symbol SOLS. At its launch, the company had approximately 4,000 employees, 24 manufacturing sites and four research and development centres, serving more than 3,000 customers across 120 countries and territories.
Its specialty-materials portfolio includes protective fibres alongside refrigerants, semiconductor materials, data-centre cooling, nuclear-energy applications and healthcare packaging. Those activities form the company's broader business, while the Virginia programme is directed at the existing fibre and composite-materials facility. The staffing and site figures describe Solstice at its October 2025 launch.
